Semantic Markup and Search Engine Optimisation

This two hour seminar covers the basics of Semantic markup its history and current use within web development. The seminar focuses on how web standards are being used by search engines and humans alike to create pages that can be easily searched and meaningful data can be found. The seminar will touch on aspects of accessibility and will include discussion on creating semantic meaning to binary objects such as video's and images.

The Seminar will cover;

  • Introduction to the terminology of semantic web
  • Introduction to w3c and its work
  • Overview of current XHTML and CSS standards including discussion on how search engines interpret certain XML elements
  • Discussion on microformats and an overview of current microformats
  • Introduction of semantics for binary content and overview of folksonomies (tagging)

This seminar is a hands on workshop and some coding is done during the seminar and a goodies bag of code is given out at the end.
